  Rather than a reading of Dante, this triptych seems to be a view of the spiritual reality that Dante also saw, through the eyes and the culture of his time. ‘Inferno’ is the evil that has exis-ted in the world since Cain killed Abel beneath the Tree of Life. In the darkness of the same evil, one can also glimpse the cross. ‘Purgatory’ is life’s long procession from then to now, through which man follows the progresses along the path of the spirit. The ‘ship’ of the second canto of the poem becomes the Great Ark of salvation and the spirit that guides it, the Angel of the Apocalypse. ‘Paradise’ is the promise of the revelation of God in us, who might reveal himself through a complete abandonment. As in a shipwreck, like Paul who falls on the road to Damascus, or like Jesus Christ himself on the cros...
