The male figure is not exactly Adam: it is not even a
man. And yet, in the painting, it represents the ‘Self’. Instead
of the head we can see the dove of the Spirit. In his hand there is the
apple that he offers Eve: it is not theancient temptation, but rather its
op- posite; the offer of life. So Eve accepts it, with trembling love -
not only as the tangible fruit that it appears to be, but as nutrition for
the soul. |
